Thanksgiving Travels - pt 6

While the kids played on the farm, Logan and I spent Friday doing laundry, washing the car, and packing up so that we could visit Friday night and Saturday morning.  Marcia's family came over Saturday morning for a late breakfast of cheese biscuits and we were able to sit and visit for a couple hours before getting the kids a few last tractor rides and then loading up for our trip home.

We got to Matthew and Heather's house at almost 6:30, and were treated to a delicious pot roast dinner.  The cousins had a blast playing together and Skyping with Papa.

Noah and Molly - the boys enjoyed having a pet dog for a week!

Zack is the only one getting the concept of racing in this picture. :)  He was all about Abbey during our short visit.  I guess he enjoyed having someone little around!

Caleb is getting tall!  He's a sweetheart.
A couple years ago, when we had travelled home on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, we had a terrible trip with multiple traffic jams. So this time we got up at 5, packed up and ate a breakfast casserole with Matthew's family, then got on the road at 6 a.m. This way we managed to zip right through NYC and didn't get caught in any traffic later on in the day either! We made our best time ever. I think we got home around 3:00.

Our vacation was great, although it was probably among the worst ones for sleeping.  The first few nights I was waking up a few times with Abbey and then for good at 4 a.m.  Then Tuesday she got a fever and kept me up all night, and after that she was up every hour each night.  I thought I would have a tough time getting her acclimated to sleeping thorugh the night again, but our first night home she slept 12 hours straight without waking up.  I got my hopes up....but she's been a little pistol ever since.  We'll get there.

We've been pushing to get caught up at work, get unpacked and cleaned up at home, and get ready to decorate for Christmas this weekend.  I can't wait!!!  I love this season.  We'll start doing Advent each night with the kids on Sunday.

Thanksgiving Travels - pt 5

After Thanksgiving, we shifted gears and headed over to Grandma and Papa's house to celebrate an early Christmas.  Grandma wanted to cover all of her bases with her Maine grandkids!
Papa, Logan, Marcia and Grandma

The five grandkids - Don't mind Abbey!  She had been sick with a fever for a couple days and wasn't feeling too hot.  She enjoyed her Christmas but she didn't enjoy stopping for a picture when there were new toys to be played with! :)

Grandma playing Santa Claus.

Jared was pleased with his new camping utility fork and knife. :)

Not sure what Great Grandma was chuckling about. :)

Aunt Emily kept her Thanksgiving tradition of going to the emergency room - this time is was Friday for a diabetic infection in her foot.  Thankfully nothing serious!

Thanksgiving Travels - pt 4

Thanksgiving was a fun and relaxing day.  The boys played hide-and-go-seek with Jared and Papa:

Abbey chased Sammy around and around - Sammy in his fenced in space, Abbey running around on the other side. :)

Uncle Barry and Jared - this picture would lead you to believe that Barry was taking it easy, when in fact he smoked the most delicious turkey for everybody!

Papa - shortly before he dozed off on the floor. :)

Benjamin conked out in Logan's lap while Josiah was still going strong:

Marcia and Mama, making magic in the kitchen!

Great Grandma did a lion's share of the work too.  Going strong at 86!

Everybody was enjoying Rebecca's visit from college.  She's a freshman at Liberty and is loving it!

After Barry gave thanks to the Lord for our meal, we took turns sharing what we're thankful for.  Before I could say anything, Josiah said, "I know what Mommy's thankful for: The little one that she loves more than the rest of us!"  Ha!  He is amazing. :)

By the time we took these pictures, the kids had retired to the living room and we were on our seconds and thirds. Everything was delicious!  What a feast!

Thanksgiving Travels - pt 3

Josiah and Benjamin were looking forward to this trip for months, because they LOVE visiting Papa's farm!  When Papa was home, Josiah was following him around and begging him for tractor rides and jobs to do on the farm.  Josiah helped do some work on the electric fence, and ended up turning it back on unbeknownst to Logan's dad, who got a good shock!  After that, the boys have enjoyed hearing stories about electric fence pranks that Logan's uncles used to pull.

Abbey also enjoys the tractor rides and seeing the "tows" on the farm.

Logan and his mom.  As you can see in the pictures, we had beautiful sunny weather - cold, but sunny!

Thanksgiving Travels - pt 2

Day 1 in NC consisted of Logan whisking the children over to Grandma and Papa's house (we were sleeping at Marcia and Barry's house - Logan, Abbey and I stayed there for the first five nights) while I slept in until 10:30, then logged in to work.  We all headed over at dinnertime for a birthday celebration for all three Perry kiddos!  Grandma wanted to have a party since she missed the Maine parties this year.  It was great to be all together again since our last visit in June.

Abigail needed some help with her candles. :)

I missed Josiah's first bite, when he picked up the whole little cake in one piece!

Mmmm....chocolate!

Thanksgiving Travels - pt 1

We made our annual holiday trip south, this year for Thanksgiving.  Our scheduled departure was 4 a.m. Friday the 16th so we would have time to stop and visit Josh and Sarah on our way down, but Logan and I slept right through our alarms (going off every nine minutes) for two hours!  We didn't finish packing and cleaning the house, etc. until 1 a.m., so it's probably best that we got that extra sleep, even though we had to cancel our stop in NYC.

This time we were carpooling with Mom and Molly (the dog), so we were quite a bit fuller than usual.  We borrowed a rooftop carrier to get some extra space.  The trip down went pretty smoothly.  Minimal potty breaks, one wrong exit (by yours truly), reasonable traffic through NYC.  At least that's all I can remember.  We got to Wilmington just in time for Micah's 11th birthday party, 5 p.m.!
Micah has grown up so much.  He's a not-so-miniature-anymore Matthew.  Micah does well in school, plays soccer, sings in the church musical productions, is learning to play the violin, has lots of friends (22 kids at his party!) and has a new-found skill at playing chess - he was going to an all-day chess tournament the day after his party.

We had carried down an electric go-kart from Papa, to which Micah exclaimed, "Dude!!!  That is awesome!!!"  The church had an all-nighter going on later for the teens, so there were two bounce houses in the gym and Josiah and Benjamin got a big kick out of playing floor hockey:
Noah, Caleb and Josiah keeping close to the cake:

Grandma was pretty worn out from her trip!  The boys were very excited to see Molly (on Caleb's lap in this picture), who, in turn, was petrified by all of the kids, commotion and strange surroundings!
Abbey found the chips and stayed close to them.  I did get her in the bounce houses for a little bit, but she's a two year old.  Junk food is a big thrill these days!
It was great for the kids to jump and run for a little while before we got back on the road at 7:00.  We got to NC at 1:30 a.m., and it was 3 a.m. before Abbey would settle down and go to sleep, so it was a long day and night for Logan and I.  It felt so good to arrive and begin our vacation, though!  Thursday morning before we left, Mo and Jen granted me a vacation so I wouldn't have to work remotely on our trip!  This was a huge gift.  I still had seven hours to makeup for being out of the office Friday, but after I finished those hours, I had an amazingly restful week.  Logan and I did our best to make the most of the down time, resting and reading.  I can't tell you how much we needed that!

Benji's Bowling Birthday Bash

Benjamin turned 5 a few weeks ago, and we surprised him with a bowling party.  I am a birthday party addict, so it was a really tough realisation that I couldn't pull one off for Ben with my busy schedule and a trip to NC the following weekend to prepare for.  After making several phone calls, we discovered that bowling is cheaper than almost anything else, with an added bonus of a fun activity for the kids.  We kept our plan a secret from Ben, and the boys were incessantly pestering us about where the party was going to be.  Ben was looking forward to going blindfolded:
As we headed down the road, Ben kept guessing where we were going and was being so cute.  The bowling alley is 40 minutes away, and about 30 minutes along, Ben says, "I know we're going to the bowling alley.  Ashton told me."  When we called our boys in to get ready to leave for the party, our neighbor had told the boys he'd see them at the bowling alley.  But Ben was going to play along!  He's such a little sweetie.  I think both of the boys felt guilty they had found out - very sensitive little consciences. He still insisted on wearing the blindfold all the way into the bowling alley.

I didn't get very many good pics because of the low lighting - lots of blurry shots.  I don't have any to share of the kiddos zipping around on their new scooters from Uncle Danny - a big hit!  But these should give you a good idea of the jist of the party:
The kids (and dads) had fun bowling.  Abigail bowled a couple times, but she was mostly drawn to the controls. Because she knows how to handle an iPhone, she thinks she can handle any kind of technology!
The hardest thing for me was limiting my invites so that all the kids that came could bowl.  The guests were Papa, Uncle Danny, Uncle Jim and Aunt Linda, Nana, Bree and her boys, Lisa and Tanner, Mo and Jen and Zaid, and Shawn and Shelly and Ashton.  A big THANK YOU! for celebrating Big Ben with us and for your generous gifts!  You all made the night special for our little guy!
My one time-consuming contribution to Ben's party were these Angry Bird cupcakes.  Ben had a difficult time deciding on what kind of cake he wanted.  He was waffling between Mario, Spiderman, Angry Birds and another Train cake.  When I showed him these cupcakes on Pinterest, he was instantly smitten.
Cutie spent a long time sitting with her cupcake, then spent the remainder of the party trying to get her hands on another one.  The apple does not fall far from the tree!

Here's a closeup of the cupcakes.

Ben was pretty wiped out after all of that excitement.  He was the first one asleep in the car on the way home.  Benjamin is a little charmer who brings much joy to our home.  He's an artistic soul with a sensitive heart.  He loves sports and trains and follows his big brudder around like a little puppy dog.  They have the funniest conversations together!  I wish I could replicate one for you now, but I'm too tired.

A week or so before his birthday, Benjamin sat and watched the entire 25th Anniversary concert edition of "The Phantom of the Opera."  He was so engrossed for the whole 2 1/2 hours.  Afterwards, they began bringing out actors who had played the part of the Phantom in the past - and their faces weren't scarred!  It was like a light went on for Ben that it had all been fake - up until then he couldn't comprehend that it wasn't a true story.  He finally understood what we had been trying to explain to him about plays and actors and stage makeup, etc.  He can play a little bit of the Phantom motif on the piano.  He describes the Phantom as the man who kept "interrupting" everybody when they were singing. :)

I'll leave this little Ben tribute at that.  Every day is a gift with our little man.  We are so blessed to have him as our son.  We love you, buddy!
